Kymberly Messersmith has 20-plus years of experience in public policy and governance at the state and local levels. She has created a national political network and has identified resources that come only after years of working in the industry. Messersmith has worked with state legislators, trade associations, and corporate America, and has owned and operated her own government affairs, issue strategy and public marketing firm with clients nationwide.
Messersmith has extensive experience in coalition building, management and participation. She organized a number of successful national coalitions employing the necessary skill set of diplomacy, membership outreach, communication and public relations. Messersmith worked to anticipate public challenges to corporate positions and has prepared responses in the forms of written dialogue, educational materials, outreach and question/answer formats.
In the corporate world, Messersmith served as Vice President of State Government Affairs for the American Express Company where she was responsible for formulating and directing legislative, regulatory and executive strategies for the American Express family of companies. She managed and advised lobbyists in all of the states while particularly coordinating government affairs in the company’s primary states of operation. She is a visionary leader, developing and executing strategic corporatevisions based on executive- and product-related goals and policies.
Before beginning her tenure at American Express, Messersmith served as Directorof Corporate Programs for the National Governors’ Association (NGA), increasing corporate support fourfold within two years. She worked with the NGA’s Center for Best Practices to incorporate private sector research and viewpoints into the public sector discussion process.
Prior to NGA, she worked for the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), where she ultimately served as Director of Research. Before her promotion, Messersmith was the Editor of Tort Report and a Task Force Director for Civil and Criminal Justice. She was also Manager of State Issues for the Chemical Manufacturers’ Association (CMA).
Messersmith serves on the Board of Directors for Calvary Women’s Services. In the political arena, she has served as a delegation leader for the American Council for Young Political Leaders, on the private sector Board of the National Order of Women Legislators, on the private sector Board of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators and as President of the Washington Area State Relations group. Messersmith also received a Jeffersonian award from the American Legislative Exchange Council.
